Vegetable Oils, Harmful to our Health?
Vegetable Oils, what are they and why are they so harmful to our health?
Vegetable oils include soybean, canola ( also known as rapeseed ), corn, grape seed, cottonseed, safflower, and sunflower oils. They are ultra processed and are the cheapest you can buy, of course. I cringe every time I am at the checkout counter at the shops and I see someone putting a buy 1 get 2 free promo on any of these oils into their cart. Why can’t this be done with the healthier ones?!
If anyone were to ask me if there is one thing they could start with to improve their health today? It be to eliminate all vegetable and seed oils.
I put the oils at #1 for very good reason. We aren’t drinking them or using them as a salad dressing alone, but they are used a lot when cooking. So we don’t even know the difference when they are replaced with healthier versions. They are simply an additive and a tool. Not a flavor choice.
Vegetable and Seed Oils are very highly processed oils. They are heated to extremely high temperatures causing the unsaturated fatty acids to create by-products that are harmful to our health. They are treated with a solvent based from petroleum to get even more oils extracted from the seeds. Other chemicals are then used to deodorize the oils, which produce the trans fats. Then, if that wasn’t enough, they add chemicals to help the coloring and more additives to keep them from oxidizing too quickly.

The problem with Vegetable and Seed Oils
Vegetable and Seed Oils cause health problems for us not only because they are highly processed and full of chemicals, they also contain high amounts of omega 6 fatty acids. We need a healthy ratio of 1:1 when it comes to omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids. When we are consuming take out, dining out, eating packaged foods and buying these oils to cook with we are getting ridiculous amounts of omega 6 fatty acids and not near enough of omega 3 fatty acids. Vegetable and seed oils are literally in almost everything. They are used in most restaurants and are put into most condiments. They are in our packaged chips and crackers as well as added to nut butters. I get so angry when I am label reading with my children. It doesn’t even matter if you are in a health food store, it's still there. There are more and more products coming out that are in better oils such as coconut, avocado or olive oil. So I highly recommend always reading your labels before you purchase a packaged product. Be aware of what you are consuming or feeding your family.
I would love to see the oils never leaving the shelves of the stores. I would love to see the professionals and media stop recommending canola oil and other seed oils as a “heart healthy” option. There is so much information on this topic. Please do your research and be aware these are not good alternatives for you.
